Marla Cone, a prize-winning environmental reporter at The Los Angeles Times, announced to members of the Society of Environmental Journalists that she was taking a buyout.
"After 30 years at newspapers, including 18 at the Times, I simply lost hope," Cone writes in a heartfelt message on Romenesko's blog.

I lost hope after just three years in the business. As they say, you don't have to be the last rat off a sinking ship to know it's going down though I applaud your efforts to prevent further disaster.
